Position Title: Graduate Assistant

The Pride Center works to provide a safe and welcoming environment for UT’s diverse lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, questioning, intersex, and asexual communities and their allies.

Summary of Position:

The Graduate Assistant is responsible for assisting with the coordination, implementation, and assessment of student engagement activities, center programming, and education initiatives. Applicants must have a solid understanding of issues related to LGBTQIA+ communities and a strong commitment to the study of social justice, diversity, inclusion, and intersectionality. Students from any program, department, or college may apply.

Responsibilities May Include

Programming & Advising:

  • Oversee and advise the Ambassador Program
  • Supervise ambassador recruitment, interviewing, selection, training, and evaluation processes
  • Create and update ambassador manual and forms
  • Partner with campus organizations, departments, businesses, and community groups
  • Plan, organize, lead and facilitate programs and events

Campus Education:

  • Teach Safe Zone workshops
  • Prepare curriculum and presentations
  • Analyze and create reports of pre- and post-workshop evaluations
  • Coordinate training requests

Center Operations:

  • Train new student assistants and oversee schedules
  • Maintain websites, social media, and create weekly e-newsletters
  • Staff desk, maintain facilities, attend meetings with director/department

Assessment & Research:

  • Research best practices of LGBTQIA services in higher education
  • Assess programs and prepare semester/annual reports
  • Provide input into center goals and strategic planning


  • Tuition Waiver (student fees not included)
  • Monthly Stipend, $1100/month, $9900 annual
  • Graduate Student Health Insurance
  • 20 Hours per week; 9 Month Appointment; At will position
  • Must be a full time graduate student seeking an advanced degree
  • Renewable based on performance

Student Assistants must:

-be enrolled UT undergraduate students at least half time (6 hours)

-have Federal Work Study (check at One Stop or

-hold a GPA of 2.5 or higher

-carry a minimum of six (6) credit hours during employment

-work an average of 12-15 hours per week


Student Assistant Responsibilities:

– Staff the Pride Center

– Provide appropriate information and referrals

– Assist with paperwork and data entry

– Represent the Center at events

– Welcome visitors and answer the phone

– Compile information from the Internet

– Attend bi-weekly staff meetings

-be self-motivated, dependable, and mature
-possess good customer service and communication skills
-have enthusiasm for the mission of the Pride Center
-be able to take initiative and work independently without supervision
-work well as part of a team
-be educated on and have a commitment to issues related to LGBTQIA, social justice, intersectionality, diversity, inclusion, & allyship
-be able to interact with people of varying backgrounds and identities
-have the ability to convey complicated and/or controversial information in a respectful and clear manner
-demonstrate commitment to fostering a diverse working and learning environment

Student Assistant FAQs:

– Pay is bi-weekly by electronic deposit on Fridays

– Pay rate is $7.25, minimum wage

– A license, social security card, and voided check is needed to set up payroll
